Coastal Restoration

Tchefuncte West Bank Marsh Restoration Project is an approximately 40-acre marsh creation project located in St. Tammany Parish Louisiana. The project is located at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River along the west bank of Lake Pontchartrain and serves to protect the historic Tchefuncte Lighthouse.

Sediment will be hydraulically dredged from the lake to fill in the areas to the east and west of the peninsula where the lighthouse is located. As a part of the preliminary alternatives, options were developed for analyzing the restoration project as either a marsh creation and/or a beach restoration. Ultimately, the marsh alternative was selected to protect the existing shoreline, and to match the proposed project to the existing habitat.

During the alternatives analysis, survey data was obtained within the borrow area and fill sites as well as geotechnical investigations within the borrow area to identify the material available. The project features include:

• Marsh Restoration & Borrow Area Design

• Containment Dike Design with armoring

• Equipment Access & Dredge Pipe Corridor analysis

Project Goals:

• Protect the existing shoreline along the eastern and western sides of the historic Tchefuncte Lighthouse.

• Create +/- 40-acre restoration area using local sediments at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River.
